BPOs Creating Jobs For Small Town Youth

The BPO sector is faced with a major crunch of hiring new employees in sufficient numbers in metro cities. As a result, they are directing their attention to small towns in search of employable graduates. In cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Bangalore, the demand for people is already outstripping supply.

The major chunk of BPO companies is in the National Capital Region (NCR), which includes Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida. Some of the big companies based here include GE, Spectramind, Daksh, Convergys and Keane. The demand for fresh graduates from BPO companies in the NCR region is between 20,000 and 25,000. The colleges and universities within the region are unable to supply employable graduates to meet this demand.

However, according to recruitment firms, which supply people to BPO companies, all graduates are not necessarily relevant. Only 10-30% of the total graduating population in Mumbai is employable in BPOs. There are certain basic skills, which are absolutely necessary for BPO companies like decent spoken English language skills and not all graduates have them.

As a result, these companies are adopting a more national strategy for recruitment. But the problem is that people recruited in these small towns face enormous pressure trying to assimilate within the company and outside. Sometimes, these problems creep into the work environment, leading to attrition or loss of productivity. As a result, BPO companies sometimes face a sudden exodus as a bunch of people from the same town leave to join the competitor or head back home.
